Wonder not, where was I all these days? A trip to Tawang has left me awe-struck and humbled! A secret close guarded by nature, Arunachal’s Tawang is nature in all her majesty. It is a whole new world of thin dustings of snow, barrenness and aridity with a conspicuous desolation patched up with thin, eerie silence not known to the world. Magnificence at its modest best, Arunachal is adorned with snow flakes, barren and bleak landscape, soft and sublime flapping Buddhist prayer flags, lakes and waterfalls.
I feel grateful to
all those who helped me seek out solitude and marvel in Tawang.
Reaching Tawang from Delhi
I boarded IndiGo (6E201) at 5:30 in the morning and landed at 7:45 at Guwahati 2 hours later. Next, I hired a taxi to Tezpur which was 4½ hr drive from Guwahati. Further locomotion to Tawang takes 12-16 hours depending upon the road conditions and weather. A number of checks and scans at Bhalukpong, Assam and Arunachal border, tells you are on the right track, albeit Tawang is still 12-14 hours. If driving on your own, do take a break at Bomdi la or Dirang.
My two day trip
The trip started from Missamari in Assam along the West Kameng district stretching to Bhalukpong and beyond. However, the major ascent to Tawang commences at Bhalukpong, a dream sequence abode of forests and swaying orchids. Bhalukpong is also an excellent rafting stretch known to lure the adventure junkies. I drove past myriads visual delights, fields of orchids, women at work, streams and mountains.
At Bomdi la
Let alone the signposts, tourists can, at once, come to know they are in Bomdi la, the next big post before reaching Tawang. Entire Bomdi la is enwrapped in hues of colour, colourful houses, ladies in colourful dresses and large markets that sell woollens. I got off the mighty Bolero to feel the insignificance, face to face the Himalaya at 8000 ft above the ground.
It was evening when we were greeted by the sights of Tawang. A fast run-and-locate trail helped me to find Tawang Inn, located in Nehru Market area. It was a welcome torrent of rains and freezing cold out.
Next Morning to Tawang Monastery
Tawang Monastery is a three-storied building belonging to Gelupga sect of Mahayana School of Buddhism and also the birth place of sixth Dalai Lama. Pin drop silence greets one as you enter this 17th Century Gompa. The milieu compels you to spend hours amid the Sakyamuni Statue and muted state of mind. Outside is a beauty: the Tawang Chu Valley. We spent half day at Tawang Market trying our hands at chicken soup and hot momos.
